Triumphant electronic music elevated by marching band theatrics

Rising synths and deep bass were paired with futuristic space station imagery as enough fog to obscure the entirety of London churned out in front of twin banks of samplers, signaling the moment electronic duo Odesza and accompanying members were to take the stage on Friday night to their track ‘Intro (A Moment Apart)’.

Next, a troupe of snare drummers marched dramatically on stage and the LED screen behind them burst into color as the pair launched into their signature cinematic ‘Bloom’. The drummers synchronized robotic movements brought a theatrical element to the performance and they would appear various times throughout the set to amp up key moments.

Formulaic but never dull, the performance’s stage design and lighting production were impressive, with giant screens displaying lava flows or Blade Runner-esque cities of the future both in front of and behind the artists immersing them in their digital surroundings.

With atmospheric electronic music that could soundtrack a dramatic TV commercial or triumphant moment in a big-budget blockbuster film, the duo, who hail from Bellingham Washington, USA, kept crowds moving to a flashy stage production which was worthy of recording for later review, as shown by the hundreds of smartphones in video mode that were held the air at any given moment.
