Indie pop goes narcoleptic

A new Japanese band formed just four years ago, D.A.N. has gained quite a following for its atmospheric electronic rock, recently boosted by collaborations with Floating Points, a UK artist of similar bent. The trio grounds its sound in synthesizer and androgynous high-pitched vocals, then fills it out with bass and drums. The vibe is somewhere between cerebral and druggy, like party music for shoegazers. The group takes a low key, shoegaze-y approach to performance. They were backlit for nearly the whole set, just black contours of musicians against variously colored backdrops. But even from dark anonymity, the sung melodies did capture attention. Towards the end, the band built up to some real postrock-style emotional intensities. In those moments, the music was genuinely powerful. And then, just as it was getting good, the set over. It wasn’t enough to make me love them, but I’d definitely say they’re a band to watch.
