A peek into the electronic mind of the Sakanaction vocalist

Hours after his main band Sakanaction wrapped up a triumphant set on the Green Stage, Ichiro Yamaguchi took to the decks at the Red Marquee to play some techno. The best way to think of this hour of minimal thump was to use it as a way to learn deeper insight into the dance side of Yamaguichi’s brain. A large part of Sakanaction’s success over the last decade — and most certainly a massive factor towards their earlier show at the fest being a Friday highlight — has been how the band strikes a balance between rock and electronic music, and listening to Yamaguchi’s mix hinted at the DNA of the latter, with a focus on pulsing synth melodies and nervy beats (all backed by visuals of monochrome shapes fitting for a NASA planning meeting). It also reminded of how vital Yamaguchi’s pop sensibilities are to his main band, because things could get a little too self-indulgent at times. Maybe for fans only, but solid supplemental material all the same.
