The real Aussie blues

When the soundchecks are raw and powerful you know the real performance is going to be special. The Teskey Brothers, hailing from Melbourne Australia, are a group that has been playing together some 12 years, perfecting their craft, honing in their sound and generating a decent hometown following along the way.

Then when they finally released their first LP last year, people around the world started to notice these boys are the real deal. They play and sing the blues in an analogue perfection that is seldom seen in today’s digital domain. Their sound harks back to the golden age blues soul and funk.

The group of 4 became 6 for this festival and included a 2 person horn section, this really opened up the sound of the band overall, especially when all six were playing in unison. The real stars of the band are the namesakes of the group, our two brothers. That is Sam on lead guitar playing his heart out and Josh on vocals shouting out the blues like a genuine southerner and not a chipper young Aussie from Melbourne.

It can be strangely disorienting at times to see Josh speak between songs, with his heavy Australian accent and happy go lucky demeanor, then moments later witness the transportation to a rip-roaring genuine blues wailer.

The set was an hour long, but with some songs lingering over ten minutes in length, the set time hardly seemed long enough for the band to fully demonstrate what they can do.

Each member was given brief moments to solo or go off on tangents, building up to peaks where the whole band joined in. They’re a band with a great sound and a lot of potential, they play again at Fuji in the small Crystal Palace stage in a set that should be sure to get plenty dancing and moving in the wee hours of the night, a sight I’m sure they’re rightly used to by now.
