Why haven't we played here before?
Ben Howard is a new age poet that plays with a surprisingly large band of musicians, for the more minimalist sound they produce. They’re a group that fits perfectly with the laid back Sunday afternoon vibe of the Field of Heaven stage.
Howard’s live band, consists of keys, strings, drums, guitars and Ben on vocals, often playing guitar as well. The young Englishman looked rather pleased to be playing the open air, Field of Heaven stage as a the clouds passes by from above.
Unlike some of his album recordings, performing live the band goes on looming tangents while Howard’s lyrical content takes flight and invites further exploration. Howard’s themes range from lost love, to the joys of living to the mundane existence of us all. His stories are told in metaphorical riddles that could be dissected and examined for days.
Recordings of Ben Howard give you an idea of his musical potential but the live experience takes you to an even more intimate place with the man. His voice and sound is very clear, personal and emotional. Although I didn’t know Ben Howard well before this set, this experience peaked my interest into further diving into his work the first chance I get. Recommended for fans and newcomers alike. I’m sure Ben Howard live is great during any setting, however I think the breezy, blue sky setting of this Sunday afternoon’s set at the Field of Heaven will be a tough one to top.
