A touch of Havana

Interactivo is a Cuban music collective founded by Roberto Carcasses, son of legendary Cuban musician Bobby Carcasses, and it is known for its constantly shifting lineup and fluidity of genre. As a group it is about musical freedom and artistic expression. This spirit was more than apparent at their Field of Heaven set on Sunday, their final of a number of performances at the festival.
Their set at times had wonderfully laid back vibes. The music was there to engage with if you felt so inclined, or it could simply serve as background music for a chat or a snack. At other times the band really commanded attention and there were a number of real bangers.

Musically they were at their strongest when they were playing music with a direct Afro-Conan feel, but their excursions closer to funk, reggae and jazz gave the listener more of a sense of anticipation than if they only played their wonderful Cuban staples. Each of the musicians was impeccable, and the band’s sense of timing and collaboration were the things that really made them worth a listen.

It wasn’t easy to dance in the mud and rain, but Interactivo sure made you want to. If you didn’t get the chance to see one of their performances this year just keep your fingers crossed that they come back again in the future.
