Eclectic rare tunes for a soggy crowd
Rare 7 inch vinyl was in high supply for Fukuda Shunske’s late night Palace of Wonder set. Throughout his hour long set he worked through folk, reggae, roots, rock, funk, soul, disco and more. As is commonplace for DJs in the Palace of Wonder, this set was strictly 45s, of course.
As typhoon conditions raged outside, the Palace started filling up inside. People taking refuge from a storm with a little funk and deep groove didn’t seem like a bad idea to myself and the other hundreds packed in the Palace. The place was rocking within 10 minutes or so.
As is common in the Palace of Wonder, the inevitable dance circle started up with the mandatory break dancing, handstands and dance offs. These dance battles between a small group of either skilled or drunk revelers always creates a bit of a spectacle and got the party jumping even more.
I had seen it all before, so I took a step back and chilled out to the rest of the set bobbing along with the closing hip hop, latin and funky beats. Fukuda is a great selector and has a solid collection of rare vinyl, a combination I’d easily pay to see again!
