Shiver Me Timba

Interactivo had the notable distinction of being introduced by Fuji Rock founder Masa Hidaka, who called for the audience to enjoy and dance their way through the show. The collective of musicians from Havana, Cuba really needed no encouragement on their behalf to get the crowd going, as their show took onlookers through a myriad of styles – from more familiar salsa beats, to funk, to reggae, all wrapped up in a mix of Afro-Cuban timba.

Directed by Roberto Carcasses, son of Afrojazz pioneer Bobby Carcassés, Interactivo brings together a melting pot of musicians and styles, so the vibe of the show was as cohesive as it was meandering. No genre seemed out of reach as the group segued between genres during songs. One such example was a number which started as a plaintive violin-led folk song which took a trip through salsa, funk and jazz until everyone on stage was busting out their salsa-moves. In another movement, the group began with nods to Bob Marley in a reggae infused chorus of voices before heading into more uptempo Latin territory.

The show was like watching an incredibly slick jam, rather than a rehearsed performance. With so many members on stage, it was bewildering to keep up with who was singing what and when, and the ease with which it was achieved meant that the set slid by in a flurry of Caribbean vibes.

The collective will be playing in various guises over the next few days and will be sure to get some hips a wiggling at the following venues:

The Roberto Carcasses Trio play Cafe De Paris Sat 14:30
Cubana Fiesta play Gypsy Avalon Sat 21:00
Interactivo play Field of Heaven Sun 14:10
