Japanese pop reggae

This is a new body of work from Sandii –– a Japanese ‘80s pop star for soft, beachy music –– in collaboration with UK-based reggae producer Denis Bovell. So it’s definitely hitting for Fuji Rock’s slightly older, local demographic. Aside from Bovell on guitar and the hula dancers, the stage was full of 50s plus Japanese musicians wearing Aloha shirts, sunglasses and straw fedoras. The music was indeed some version of reggae, though a bit pop and toothless for my taste. But it was still fun enough, and definitely a big hit with an audience who probably sing Sandii & the Sunsetz tunes at karaoke. Sandii was in very good form, in good voice and gracious to the audience. After all, this was her party!
