The man in the diamond bracelets on the CDJs was Jagz Kooner, a UK figure who’s produced for and remixed many of the most seminal bands of the last couple decades, including Primal Scream, New Order, Kasabian, Oasis, The Prodigy, Massive Attack, Soulwax, The Kills, Rammstein and plenty of others.

It was his job to kick off the weekend-long party at the Unfairground, a brand new and entire festival zone of two DJ stages, bar, circus tent, and graffiti and art installations that has almost literally been teleported in from Glastonbury, which is not taking place this year.

So several dozen of the Glastos will be in Fuji Rock all weekend. The fun started with the steampunk freak show antics of the Pyratrix Circus, after which Jagz took the controls, throwing down beats that were dark and dirty and very rocking. It was kind of a mix underground sounds and the types of popular independent artists he’s known for working with. His set was early –– 6:30 to 8pm –– but by the time it got dark, a solid crowd was dancing off their heads. I asked one of them, a UK native, what kind of genre he’d use to classify the music. “I have no idea,” he said. “I’d just call it good.”
