An easygoing way to start the day

Making sense of the weather Sunday morning proved difficult. One moment the sun was peeking out from the clouds, the next it was raining. Not nearly as bad as Saturday night’s windy conditions, but unpredictable enough to keep everyone on their toes.

Hiraidai had just the consistency necessary to make a perpetually grey morning at the Field Of Heaven a little more calming. Joined by a decent-sized band, the long-running Japanese singer/songwriter opened his set up with a cover of “I Shot The Sheriff,” a take closer to Eric Clapton than Bob Marley but sounding easy-going for the 11 a.m. crowd. From there, he and his band weaved through a jammy session featuring a few easy-breezy moments and a fair amount of technical displays, all topped by Hiraidai’s singing. And to really give folks a calm conclusion, he ended with his hit song “Slow & Easy,” breaking out the ukulele to offer some musical warmth. Here’s hoping it carries over to the rest of the day.
