Perky Punky Poppy
It took a liberal pouring of gin and tonic to get into Zombie-Chang’s set at the Naeba Shokudo stage. The electro number that kicked off the set initially didn’t sit well, veering towards the kooky, quirky pop this listener was concerned might dominate the whole show. Fortunately, a few songs in, it became clear that Zombie-Chang was not going to keep to this formula and instead was going to do things her own way. While she embraces the high-energy pop genre, she equally seemed at home with her band bringing in a more rounded sound to the set, pulling in bedroom pop at times, more eclectic banging numbers at others, with changes in pace and style that prevented overwhelm. There were catchy pop riffs and rapping, air punching and visits from passing moths. Zombie-Chang seemed to be evolving through her set, with some numbers seeming much more nuanced that others, and as she continues to push into new realms with her work, it will be interesting to see how she progresses.
