Folk Turned Fire

Parlor Greens make music alchemy with just 4 instruments: a Hammond organ, two guitars, and drums.

They face each other and don’t rely upon in-ear monitors. Hearing every note, beat, and utterance, and in mid-song there might be some changes.

With these instruments, they turn up a storm of soul, funk, blues, pop, and dare I say, country? That’s right, there’s a well-known George Harrison cover in their set, as well as Dolly Parton’s “Jolene,” but turned around from its sad lamenting chorus and more like a matter-of-fact moment when your man leaves you.

Jimmy James, the vocalist and guitarist of the band, is center stage. Or should we say his two guitars are the foundation of the song. His main guitar, or what has been rumored to be the first guitar he ever had in his life at the age of 14, a white Fender Stratocaster, feels like an old friend, a magical blues riff machine that jumps from Hendrix to the White Stripes and Black Sabbath.

But his other guitar, Silvertone, is the one that wrote the band’s signature songs like “In Green We Dream, “Parlor Stut,” and “Driptorch.” The tone of the guitar brings one back to Motown and Stax record era.

Towards the end of the set, James dedicated a song to recently deceased Sharon Jones from Brooklyn’s Dap Kings. ‘I had a big crush on her, and she had a nickname for people that she didn’t know.

Jones was discovered late in her life, around her 60s. Still, her influence is undeniable upon a burgeoning funk scene blossoming in the US and elsewhere, including highly anticipated performances from Vulfpeck and Ezra Collective.

Towards the end of the set, the band teased a track from “Eat Your Greens,” from an upcoming album. If it’s anything like their debut, it will be sure to rock.
