Charting new territory in neo-classical music
Vampire Weekend had the honor of closing this year’s festival, as one of the final acts on Green Stage.
The set was highly anticipated on the strength of the band’s fifth album, “Only God Was Above Us.” To pay tribute to the three original members of the band, the original stage setup was a trio performing in front of a curtain wall: Ezra Koenig (Vocals/Guitar), Chris Baio (Bass), and Chris Thomson (Drummer) performing their first hit song “Mansard Roof.”
The light-hearted trio continued with the song “Holiday.” And after talking to the audience and saying how happy the band was to be returning after three years, the band launched into “Ice Cream Piano”, with the curtain wall falling and revealing a full backing band.
The added members help round out the band’s sound though it didn’t make them lose their light hearted pop sensibilities. The expanded band also indicated the set list will closely follow their latest release including the new song, “Classical.”
And when it came to “Sympathy,” a dystopian scene was conjured on the video screen, including swirling logos and a long violin solo. The next song, “New Dorp,” was a collaborations between SBTRKT and Ezra Koenig.
And sensing the set was coming to an end, the band quickly leapt into favorites such as “This Life”, “A-Punk,”, and “Oxford Comma.” Even though the band benefitted from a longer festival set, there was much they could still perform. The banded ended with “Harmony Hall” and the final song “Hope,” during which time members left the stage one by one, ultimately returning to the original trio, and then going down even further to the last remaining member, Chris Baio, put down his bass and left the stage.
