And Now for Something Completely Different

It is rare to see a band composed of 4 vocalists, 2 bassists and a drummer. It is even rarer to see a band which fuses pop and Korean pansori, a Korean storytelling musical style. But as with many unexpected surprises in music, this one was awesome.

The bass and drums have a solid foundation of groovy pop, while the percussive birdsong-y support vocalations and vibrato semi-spoken lead vocals glued the whole thing together into something incredibly unique but incredibly accessible. Oh, and super cool. They really came across as the coolest kids at an art school party that you wish you could talk to, but you know you would just embarrass yourself because they are way too cool for you.

From song to song the genre shifted, from grooving on psychedelic hip hop to outer space k-pop club, to of Montreal through a weird Korean filter. Hard to describe, which might be apparent, but infectious and somehow not just gimmicky.

For anyone who made the trek to Orange Echo after Tatsuro Yamashita’s set, across the treacherous fields of wet clay, they were treated to maybe the weirdest and coolest set of the weekend.
