A Big Set
Little Simz sure didn’t look so little on the big Green Stage Sunday afternoon. Her grimes infused hip hop filled the space without the aid of fancy projections or gimmicks. Just Simbi, a mic, a bit of a band and a track. It has been awhile since Fuji Rock has had a rapper poet like her own the big stage in such a big way.
She really knew how to get the crowd on her side, asking them if she could turn things up mid-set, and then goading them into dancing. Oh, major pro-tip… if you want a Japanese crowd on your side just throw on some Samurai Blue kit. Nicely done, Simz.
After a little warming up, she had the crowd eating out of her hand. Hands were in the air, clapping on the breaks, booties shaking and feet moving.
Little Simz’s power was in her fierce delivery, but all done with a smile. She had important things she wanted to say, but she also maintained the party. Her wonderful, dynamic tracks and band along with her endlessly confident delivery and effortless charisma are what carried the show though. She brought in Fuji’s last evening with style and vibes.
She said she was grateful to her fans and a very, very, very, very long way from home, but after this set she’ll always have a second home here at Fuji Rock.
